When electrically charged particles of solar wind get close to earth, they are guided to the poles by the magnetosphere. The particles strike gas molecules in the atmosphere, producing a green, red, blue or violet sheet of light. The Aurora Borealis, commonly known as the Northern Lights, are very beautiful to see when you are in vacation in Canada or Alaska or somewhere up north.
